미국에서 이방인으로 살아가기(9) - Living as a Foreigner in America(9)

 

트럼프 대통령 2기가 출범하면서,

신분 문제는 더욱 심각하고 핫한 화두로 떠올랐다.

미국에 안전한 비자로 와 있다고 하더라도 실제로 걸림돌이 너무나 많기 때문이다.

 

As President Trump’s second term begins,
the issue of status has become a more serious and hot topic.
Even if you are in the United States on a safe visa, there are actually so many obstacles.

 

대부분 학생신분, 그리고 OPT, 취업 비자, 그 후엔 영주권 순이지만, 

대부분 취업 비자 혹은 영주권에서 그 길이 막혀 한국으로 돌아가거나,

다른 길을 선택하는 순간이 오게 된다.

특히나 영주권 스폰을 해준다는 명목으로 노예처럼 부려먹기 일쑤이거나,

월급으로 딜을 하는 경우가 대부분이다.

  

Most of them are students, then OPT, work visa, and then permanent residency, but most of them end up going back to Korea or choosing another path when the path is blocked by a work visa or permanent residency.
In particular, they often work like slaves under the pretext of sponsoring permanent residency, or
they deal with them for a salary.

 

또한 같은 한국인끼리 그러는 경우가 너무 많다는 것이 서글픈 일이다.

중국이나 일본, 인도 등 많은 아시아 국가들은 해외에서 더욱 그들만의 결속력을 보이곤 한다.

그리고 스폰서 등도 그들끼리는 이해해주고 끌어주는 경우가 많다.

하지만 유난히 한국인들은, 그렇지 않다.

왜 이런 문화, 이런 인식들이 생겨났는지는 좀 더 탐구해 봐야 할 일이겠지만,

한국인들은 오히려 서로를 더욱 이용하고, 사기를 치는 경우가 많다.참으로 안타깝다.

 

It is also sad that Koreans often do this.
Many Asian countries, such as China, Japan, and India, tend to show their own solidarity overseas.
And sponsors often understand and support each other.
However, Koreans are particularly different.
Why this culture and this perception came to be is something that needs to be explored further,
but Koreans tend to use each other more and cheat each other more.
It is truly unfortunate.

 

취업 영주권은 고용주가 고용하기 전에 고용을 하기 위해 해주는 영주권이다.따라서, 원칙은 고용 전에 광고를 내고, 고용을 하고, Work peprmit을 내어주고, 최종 영주권을 받는 절차를 거친다.그리고 '취업 영주권'이기 때문에 영주권을 받고 이곳에서 일을 최소한 2년 이상 하는 것이 맞다.그러나 현실은 매우 다르다.영주권을 조건으로 고용 후, 1-2년 미뤄가며 일을 잘해야 영주권을 시작해준다는 조건을 건다.그리고 그 이유를 영주권을 해주면 빨리 그만둔다는 이유를 댄다.결국 악순환이 된다.오히려 처음부터 영주권 스폰을 해주면, 영주권 기간동안, 또한 그 후에도 안정되게 더 일을 잘 할 수 있다.하지만 영주권을 해준다는 명목으로 1-2년을 미루다보면,직원들은 당연히 고용주에 대한 안좋은 감정이 생기게 되고,영주권만 받으면 나가겠다는 생각이 자리잡게 된다. 결국 서로에게 리스크만 남게되는 셈이다.

 

Employment permanent residency is a permanent residency that employers give to hire before hiring.
Therefore, the principle is to advertise before hiring, hire, issue a work permit, and go through the process of receiving the final permanent residency.
And since it is an 'employment permanent residency', it is right to receive the permanent residency and work here for at least 2 years.
However, the reality is very different.
After hiring with the condition of permanent residency, they delay it for 1-2 years and make it a condition that permanent residency will start if you do well in your job.
And they say that if they give you permanent residency, you will quit quickly.
In the end, it is a vicious cycle.
In fact, if you sponsor permanent residency from the beginning, you will be able to work more stably during the permanent residency period and even after.
However, if you delay it for 1-2 years under the pretext of giving you permanent residency,
the employees will naturally develop negative feelings toward the employer,
and the idea that they will leave as soon as they receive permanent residency will take hold.
In the end, only risks remain for both parties.

 

제대로 이민법을 이해하고,서로를 믿는 관계로 발전한다면 모두가 안정되게 일하고 신분을 유지할수 있을 텐데한국 기업들은 영주권으로 한국인들을 노예로 부리는 악덕 기업이라는 오명을 받고직원들은 영주권만 받으면 튀어버리는 먹튀 같은 사람들이 되어 버리고 있다. 

 

어려운 시기에 모두가 안정되게 일할 수 있는 방법을 찾을 순 없을까?해외에서 만난 같은 민족끼리 조금 더 서로를 위하고 도울수 있는 방법을 찾을 수 있으면 좋을 것 같다는 안타까운 마음이 든다.

 

If we properly understand immigration laws,
and develop relationships of trust with each other, everyone will be able to work stably and maintain their status,
but Korean companies are being branded as evil companies that enslave Koreans with permanent residency,
and employees are becoming like rip-offs who run away once they receive permanent residency.
Can't we find a way for everyone to work stably during these difficult times?

I feel regretful that it would be better if people of the same ethnicity who meet overseas could find a way to help and care for each other a little more.
