나는 개인적으로 정해진 운명만을 믿는 사람은 아니지만,
때론 운명을 믿고 싶은, 아니 그에 기대고 싶은 사람이기도 하다.
'운명'이라는 한국어는 영어로는 'fate', 그리고 'destiny' 라는 두 단어로 구분되기도 한다.
사전상으로는 같은 의미로 나오긴 하지만,
'fate' 이라는 단어는 어쩔수 없이 정해진 운명이라는 느낌으로 쓰일때가 더 많은 것 같다.
'destiny'는 내가 무엇인가를 개척할수 있는 운명이랄까?

Sometimes, I am a person who wants to believe in fate, or rather, lean on it.

Does ‘destiny’ mean that I can pioneer something?
요즘 세상에서 벌어지고 있는 일들을 보고 있노라면,
운명이라는 것이 차라리 정해져 있었으면 하고 생각이 들때가 많다.
도무지 이해가 되지 않는 사람들의 행동들, 각종 범죄들, 전쟁..
삶의 연륜으로나마 이해하려고 애써도 잘 되지가 않는다.
억울한 사람들을 보면 같이 아파하다가, 화가 나다가, 왜 그래야 하는지 너무 깊이 빠져들 때가 있다.
그럴 때는 '아, 그냥 저사람의 운명이었나 보다' 라고 이해하는 것이
내 마음이, 내 생각들이 조금 더 빨리 정리되는 것 같다.
Looking at what is happening in the world these days,
There are many times when I wish fate had been decided.
People's actions that I can't understand, various crimes, war...
Even if you try to understand it based on your years of life, it doesn't work.
When I see people who have been wronged, I feel pain with them, get angry, and then sometimes I get too deep into why they should be that way.
At times like that, it’s better to understand, ‘Ah, maybe it was just that person’s fate.’
My mind and thoughts seem to be organized a little faster.
아직도 세계에 존재하는 독재국가, 공산주의, 사회주의 나라들..
그리고 개인의 생명을 자신들의 소유물처럼 다루고,
이에 반기를 들면 가차없이 제거해 버리는 그들은,
참으로 이해하기가 힘들다.
그렇게 억울한 죽음을 당한 사람들은, 무엇인가를 잘못해서도 아니고
그냥 그들의 운명이었다고 이해하고 싶다.
Autocratic, communist, and socialist countries still exist in the world.
And they treat individual lives as if they were their own property,
Those who rebel against this will be mercilessly eliminated.
It's really hard to understand.
People who suffered such unjust deaths did not do anything wrong.
I just want to understand that it was their fate.
국민들의 생명을 담보로,
자신들의 이익만을 생각하는 의사들의 집단 행동은,
그 어떤 것으로도 변명할 수 없다.
의사가 된다는 것이 장사꾼이 되기 위한 것은 아니었을 것인데,
어떻게 많은 사람들의 생명을 담보로 협상을 하려고 하는지 모르겠다.
그들의 속사정은 뒤로하고,
히포크라테스 선서문을 다시보더라도,
그들의 집단 행동은 집단 이기주의로 밖에 보이지 않는다.
선서문에서 말하는 인류봉사, 환자의 건강과 생명은 자신들의 이익에 모두 뒤쳐져 있다.
Putting the lives of the people as collateral,
The collective action of doctors who only think of their own interests,
There is no excuse for anything.
Becoming a doctor may not have meant becoming a businessman.
I don't know how they are trying to negotiate with so many people's lives as collateral.
Leaving behind their inner circumstances,
Even if we look at the Hippocratic Oath again,
Their group actions can only be seen as group selfishness.
The service to humanity mentioned in the oath and the health and life of patients are all secondary to their own interests.
인류, 종교, 국적, 정당, 정파 또는 사회적 지위 여하를 초월하여,
오직 환자에 대한 나의 의무를 지키겠다는 선서는..
한국의 파업 의사들에게는 통하는지 않는 이야기였나 보다.
Regardless of humanity, religion, nationality, political party, sect or social status,
The only oath I took was to uphold my duty to patients.
It seems that this story did not apply to the striking doctors in Korea.
어떠한 행위이든 필요할 때가 있고, 절대로 해서는 안되는 것이 있다.
법에서도, 정당방위를 할 경우에도 내 생명이 직접 위태로운 경우가 아니라면,
상대방의 생명을 위협하는 행위는 정당방위가 되지 못한다.
제 3자의 생명을 두고, 마치 인질극을 벌이듯 하는 행동은 용납될 수 없다.
There are times when any action is necessary, and there are times when it should never be done.
Even under the law and in self-defense, unless my life is directly at risk,
This is not accepted as self-defense.
It is unacceptable to act as if taking a third person's life as a hostage.
법대를 다닐 때,
도서관 앞자리에 앉은 선배가 독서대 뒷편에 써 놓았던 글귀가 생각난다.
"판사는 아무나 되어서는 안된다.
어느 사람의 인생, 생명을 결정하는 자리는 아무나 되어서는 안된다."
이 두 줄을 읽고 나는 한참 동안 '아무나' 라는 말에 대해 고민하고 생각했다.
어떤 의미로 쓴 '아무나' 인지는 모르겠지만,
나에게 매우 깊은 의미로 다가왔고,
그 '아무나' 라는 말은 아직도 내게 많은 의미로 다가온다.
When I was in law school,
I remember the words written on the back of the reading table by a senior sitting in front of the library.
“Not just anyone should be a judge.
“Not just anyone should be in a position to decide someone’s life.”
After reading these two lines, I pondered and thought about the word ‘anyone’ for a long time.
I don't know what 'anyone' means, but
It had a very deep meaning to me,
The word ‘anyone’ still holds a lot of meaning to me.
나는 그렇게 해석했다.
다른 사람의 생명과 인생을 다루는 사람은 '내 인생'을 다루는 것 처럼 다뤄야 한다고..
과연 나라면 어떻게 했을까, 과연 내 인생이라면..
아마 내게 어떤 고민이 생긴다면,
수 백번, 수 천번 다시 생각하고, 남에게 의견을 묻고, 나 스스로를 합리화도 하고,
나를 이해하려 하고, 신중하게 행동하지 않았을까?
결코 다른 사람의 인생을 쉽게 다뤄서는 안된다는 의미가 첫 번째 해석이었다.
Below is what I interpreted it.
People who deal with other people's lives should treat it as if they were dealing with 'my own life'.
What would I do if they were me? If theirs were my life...
If I have any concerns,
I rethink hundreds or thousands of times, ask others for their opinions, rationalize myself,
Wouldn't he have tried to understand me and acted carefully?
The first interpretation was that one should never treat other people's lives easily.
두 번째로는, 인생의 경험이 필요하다고 이해했다.
아무리 다른 사람을 이해하려고 해도,
내가 알고, 보고, 겪은 것이 1 밖에 없다면, 그 또한 어쩔수 없는 한계이다.
누구든 자신이 경험한 것을 가장 믿고 의지하기 때문이다.
따라서 판사는 많은 인생의 직간접 경험이 있어야 한다고 말하는 것 같았다.
Secondly, I understood that life experience was necessary.
No matter how hard you try to understand others,
If there is only one thing I know, see, and experience, that is also an inevitable limitation.
This is because everyone believes and relies on what they have experienced the most.
Therefore, the judge seemed to be saying that one must have a lot of direct and indirect life experience.
판사든, 의사이든,
남의 생명과 인생을 다루는 사람들은,
'아무나' 되어서는 안될 것이다.
그것이 그들의 운명이라 할지라도..
하물며 한 나라의 수장인 대통령은 더 말할 나위도 없다.
이미 그 자리에, 그 위치에 있다면, '아무나' 와 같은 사람은 되지 말아야 할 것이다.
Whether a judge or a doctor,
People who deal with other people's lives,
It shouldn't be 'anyone'.
Even if that is their fate...
It goes without saying that the president is the head of a country.
If you are already in that position, you should not be like 'anyone'.
