미국에서 이방인으로 살아가기(8), 신분 - Living as a Foreigner in the US - Status

미국에서 생활하면서 가장 딜레마에 빠지는 것이 바로 '신분' 이다.

어떤 사람들은 신분에 대해 신경쓰지 않고 살기도 하지만,

적절한 신분을 가지고 있는 것과 아닌 것의 차이는 생각보다 크다.

더구나 내게 자녀와 같은 가족이 있다면 말이다.

 

The biggest dilemma one faces while living in the United States is ‘status.’
Some people live without worrying about their status,
The difference between having an appropriate status and not having an appropriate status is bigger than you think.
Especially if you have a family like children.

 

미국은 직업의 귀천도 없고,

남의 눈치를 보지 않고 조용히 자신의 일만 하면서 살아가기에 매우 적합한 나라이다.

무슨 일을 하든 돈을 벌수 있고, 그에 맞춰 살면 그만이다.

하지만, 인생은 항상 생각한 대로만 흘러가지 않는다.

혼자 조용히 숨어 살지 않는 이상,

가족들과의 삶을 꾸리다 보면 예상치 못한 일들이 많이 생긴다.

그럴때마다, 신분은 최대의 걸림돌이 되곤 한다.

 

In the United States, there are no noble professions,
It is a country well-suited to living quietly and minding one's own business without worrying about what others think.
You can make money no matter what you do, just live accordingly.
However, life doesn't always go as expected.
Unless you live quietly and alone,
When you build a life with your family, many unexpected things happen.
In such cases, status often becomes the biggest obstacle.

 

최근 많은 난민들 그리고 망명 문제를 보면서,

그리고 많은 범죄에 노출되고 연루되는 그들의 문제들을 보면서,

많은 생각이 들었다.

미국은 많은 난민들을 포용하지만, 

그로 인해 많은 리스크에 노출되어 있다.

더구나 공산주의, 세계의 반인권적인 나라들에서 몰려드는 많은 사람들을 여과없이 받아주는 그들의 시스템이,

과연, 제대로 잘 작동되고 있는 것이 맞는가 하는 것이다.

나도 이곳에 살고 있고, 이곳에서 잘 살아가고 싶은 한 사람으로서,

모두가 안전하게 살고 싶은 이곳이 되기 위해 무엇이 중요한가 되집어보게 된다. 

 

Looking at the recent large number of refugees and asylum issues,
And looking at their problems of being exposed to and involved in many crimes,
A lot of thoughts came to mind.
The United States embraces many refugees,

but as a result, it is exposed to many risks.
Moreover, their system of accepting without filtering many people from communist and anti-human rights countries around the world,
The question is whether it is indeed working properly.
As someone who lives here and wants to live well here,
It makes us reflect on what is important in creating a place where everyone wants to live safely.

 

어쩌면 적대국과 같은 곳에 오는 사람들은

Refugee 또는 Asylum 시스템으로 편하게 신분을 가지고 이곳에 정착하게 된다. 

한국과 같이 적당히 잘살고 적당히 안정된 나라에서 오는 사람들은,

매우 어중간한 위치에 놓이고, 그 어떤 신분을 인정 받기가 매우 어렵다.

매우 돈이 많거나, 결혼이라는 조건이 아니라면 말이다.

비록 미국에서 많은 돈을 쓰고, 미국 경제와 미국의 발전에 애를 쓴다할지라도,

그것만으로 신분을 받을 수가 없다.

그러한 사람들이 다시 자국으로 가야하는 것은 미국에도 좋은 일은 아닐텐데 말이다.

 

Maybe people who come to places like hostile countries
They can settle here with ease through the Refugee or Asylum system.
People who come from moderately well-off and moderately stable countries like Korea,
They are placed in a very awkward position, and it is too difficult to have any status like a visa or permanent residence recognized unless you have a lot of money or are married to a US citizen.
Even though we spend a lot of money in the United States and work hard to develop the American economy and the United States, we cannot receive the status based on that alone.
It would not be good for the United States if such people had to go back to their countries.

 

요즘 내가 자주 보는 미드에 보면, 

세계 전쟁지역에서 몰려드는 난민, 망명자들의 범죄를 다루고 있다.

이것은 실제이기도 하다.

나는 미국이 부인할 수 없는 세계의 중심이라 믿는다.

그들이 무너진다면 결국 세계는 혼란의 소용돌이에 빠지게 될 것이다.

지금 미국의 이민시스템은 과연 무엇을 위한 것인가 라는 생각이 든다.

결국 사회는 국가는, 다수가 아닌 소수의 정치로 이끌어 가게 되지만,

그 다수가 겉잡을 수 없이 커지면, 결국 그 전쟁은 다른 많은 나라들의 분쟁처럼 그렇게 이어질 수 있다.

미국을 위해 함께 성장할수 있는 사람들이 누구인지,

그리고 그들에게 미국에서 잘 정착할 수 있는 기회를 주는 것이 훨씬 현명한 방법이 아닐지 하는 생각이 든다.

 

I often watch American dramas these days,
It deals with the crimes committed by refugees and exiles flocking from war zones around the world.
This is also real.
I believe that America is the undeniable center of the world.
If they collapse, the world will eventually fall into a whirlpool of chaos.
I wonder what the current US immigration system is for.
In the end, society and the country are led by the politics of the minority, not the majority.
However, if that majority grows out of control, the war could eventually continue like conflicts in many other countries.
Who are the people who can grow together for America?
And I think it would be much wiser to give them a chance to settle down in the United States.

 

미국에서 공부를 하고 직업을 얻었지만

결국 신분 때문에 많은 것을 포기하거나 다른 길로 가야하는 사람들을 보면,

매우 안타깝다.

물론, 나도 마찬가지이다.

이직을 하는 것도, 직업을 찾는 것도, 

의료보험과 자녀의 학비 등등 모든 것들이 신분과 연결되어 있다.

이민시스템이라는 것이 결국 미국 전체를 바꿀수 있다는 것을,

그리고 이러한 것들이 현명한 방향으로 나아가기를 바래본다.

 

If people studied and got a job in the United States,

but in the end, when I see people who have to give up a lot or take a different path because of their status,
very sad.
Of course, so do I.
Changing jobs, finding a job,
Everything, including medical insurance and children's tuition, is linked to status.
The immigration system is not only about a person's life,
in the end, it can change the entire United States,
And I hope that these things move in a wise direction.
