미국에 온지 3년이 지나 4년 차에 접어든 지금,
이제 여기를 떠나면 내 '집'이 있는 미국으로 다시 오고 싶을 테지만,
아직도 내 인생의 거의 전부를 살아 온 한국식 사고방식과 생활습관 때문에 당황스럽고 짜증스러울 때가 많다.
미국이라는 곳은 거의 모든 일상이 '기다림'의 연속이라고 할 정도로 기다려야 하는 것들이 많다.
그 어떤 행정처리도 바로 되지 못하는 곳이 미국이라는 생각이 들 정도이니 말이다.
하지만 운전면허와 같은 것은 곧바로 처리되기도 한다.
어디든 전화를 걸면 그마나 10분 이내로 연결되는 한국과 달리,
미국의 각종 콜센터는 대기시간이 기본이 30분은 되고 심지어 자동응답기가 알아서 끊어버리거나 거부하기도 한다.
아예 전화연결이 안되는 경우도 많다.
그런 경우 약속을 잡아서 방문을 해야 하는데 그 조차도 안될 때는 무한 한숨이 나오기도 한다.
넓은 땅과 많은 인구.. 다양한 절차 때문일까?
아직도 이러한 이유에 대해서는 명확히 알지 못하겠다.

Now, if I leave here, I will want to come back to America, where my 'home' is.
There are still many times when I am embarrassed and annoyed by the Korean way of thinking and living habits that I have lived almost all of my life.
In the United States, there are so many things that we have to wait to the extent that almost every daily life is a series of 'waiting'.
It is to the extent that I think that the United States is a place where no administrative process can be done right away.
However, things like driver's licenses can be processed right away.
Unlike Korea, where you can call anywhere within 10 minutes,
At various call centers in the United States, the default waiting time is 30 minutes, and even the answering machine automatically disconnects or rejects calls.
In many cases, the phone does not connect at all.
In that case, you have to make an appointment and visit them, but when that doesn't work, there are infinite sighs.
Large land and large population.. Is it because of various procedures?
I'm still not clear on the reason for this.
전화기를 개통하는데 몇 시간을 기다리기도 하고, 전기와 인터넷, 이사 후 주소를 바꾸는 것도 한참을 기다리고 인내해야 된다는 것이, '빨리 빨리'를 외치며 한국에서 생활해 온 나를 초조하게 만들기도 한다.
하지만, '기다리면 되기는 하더라'는 것도 참 아이러니한 일이다.
그리고 발품을 팔고 무조건 움직여야만 이를 얻을수 있다는 것도 많은 것을 깨닫게 만든다.
어쩌면 불편하다고 생각되는 것들이 사람들을 스스로 움직이게 만드는 것이기도 하기 때문이다.
내가 불편하고 귀찮다고 무시해버리면, 아무것도 되는 일이 없기 때문이다.
누가 알려주거나 누가 대신해 줄수 없다.
물론, 이런 점을 예상하고 이뤄지는 것들은 아니지만 굳이 좋은 점을 찾자면 말이다.
Waiting for several hours to unlock the phone, waiting for electricity, and Internet, and changing the address after moving makes me nervous, shouting 'quickly, quickly' as I lived in Korea.
However, it is very ironic to do that 'you just have to wait'.
And the fact that you can get it only by stepping up and moving unconditionally makes you realize a lot.
Maybe it's because things that are considered inconvenient are what make people move on their own.
It's because if I ignore it as uncomfortable and annoying, nothing will happen.
No one can tell you or someone can do it for you.
Of course, this is not something that is expected and done, but if you really want to find a good point.
미국에 와서 정말 와닿게 느낀 것은 '권리 위에 잠자는 자는 보호하지 않는다'는 법률 명언이다.
독일의 법학자 루돌프 본 예링이 한 말로 '자신의 권리를 주장하지 않으면 아무것도 보호받지 못한다'는 의미이다.
한국의 미 대사관에 인터뷰를 보러 가면 인터뷰하는 창마다 위 법언이 쓰인 글귀를 찾을 수 있다.
그래서 미국이 '소송의 천국'이라고 불릴 정도로 소송이 많은 것도 바로 이러한 점과 일맥상통하지 않을까 싶다.
또한 미국에는 현대적인 것과 전통적인 것이 계속하여 공존한다.
아직도 우편서비스만 이용하는 공공기관이 있는가 하면, 온라인으로 대체된 곳도 많이 있다.
건물들도 24/365 고치기만 하지, 쉽게 허물어서 다시 짓지는 않는다.
이러한 미국의 문화가 시간을 천천히 가도록 하는 것은 아닌지,
이러한 문화에 익숙한 사람들은 이러한 기다림에 크게 화를 내지도 따지지도 않는다.
이것은 아직 이방인으로서 미국에 살고 있는 나에게 많은 것을 느끼게 해준다.
What I really felt after coming to the United States was the legal saying, 'Those who sleep on their rights will not be protected'.
In the words of German jurist Rudolf von Jähring, it means 'If you do not assert your rights, nothing is protected'.
If you go to the US embassy in Korea for an interview, you can find the above words written in every interview window.
So, I wonder if the fact that the United States has so many lawsuits that it is called 'the heaven of lawsuits' is in line with these points.
Also, the modern and the traditional continue to coexist in America.
Some public institutions still use only postal services, while many have been replaced online.
Buildings are also repaired 24/365, not easily demolished and rebuilt.
Doesn't this American culture slow down time?
People who are accustomed to this culture do not get very angry or argue with such a wait.
This makes me feel a lot of things to me who still lives in America as a foreigner.
나도 서서히 미국 문화에 물들어 가고 있지만, 아직은 멀었나 보다.
무한 굴레로 로그인이 되지 않고 같은 페이지로 실패하게 되는 온라인 로그인에 화가나는 걸 보면 말이다.
무엇이 좋은 것이라고 말할 수 없지만, 그래도 나는 아직 미국에 온 것이 행복하다.
그러면 된 거 아닐까.
행복의 가치를 찾을 수 있으니 말이다.
I'm slowly becoming immersed in American culture, but I think I'm still far away.
If I see that I am angry at online logins that fail to log in with infinite loops and fail to the same page.
I can't say what's good, but I'm still happy to be in America.
Maybe that's what happened.
Because I can find the value of happiness.
