아직은 미국에서 이방인으로 살아가면서,
'문화'에 대해 많은 생각을 하게 된다.
하지만 분명한 것은, 다행히도 나에게는 미국이 한국보다 잘 맞는 것 같다.
남들에게 관심이 많은 한국, 남들의 시선과 말들을 많이 신경써야 하는 한국,
요즘은 조금씩 달라지고 있지만 그래도 한국은 다른 사람들에게 관심이 많다.
미국은 개인주의라기 보다는 개개인의 개성을 존중해주는 문화, 남들에게 무관심하기 보단 있는 그대로를 받아들이는 문화가 자리잡고 있다.
이것은 오랜시간 단일민족으로 살아온 한국과 이민과 다양성을 포용하며 지내온 미국의 차이가 아닐까 싶다.
While still living as a foreigner in America,
I think a lot about 'culture'.
But what is clear is that, fortunately, the United States seems to be a better fit for me than Korea.
A Korea that is very interested in others, a Korea that has to pay a lot of attention to what others say,
Things are changing little by little these days, but Korea is still very interested in other people.
America has a culture that respects individuality rather than individualism, and a culture that accepts people as they are rather than being indifferent to others.
I think this is the difference between Korea, which has lived as a homogenous nation for a long time, and the United States, which has embraced immigration and diversity.
또한 미국에서 살아가면서 명심해야 할 것은 그 다양성 만큼이나 존중해야 할 것들이 많다는 것이다.
빨리, 정확하게, 모든 것을 순식간에 이뤄가는 한국과 달리, 미국은 항상 '제 시간에 맞게, 늦어질 수도 있고, 더 빨리 해줄순 없지만 정확히 해주긴 하니까 기다리면 된다' 라는 의식이 자리잡고 있는 듯 하다.
빨리, 정확하게 빨리빨리의 문화에 익숙한 한국인들은 어쩌면 처음 미국에 와서 가장 힘든 부분이 미국의 '제 시간에' 라는 문화일지도 모르겠다.
하지만 한국에서 느긋한 성격으로 힘들었다면 미국 특유의 '제 시간' 문화가 맞을지도 모른다.
그렇다고 해서 느려도 된다는 의미는 아니다. '제 시간, 정확한 시간' 이것이 미국이 추구하는 바다.
재촉하지 않지만, 안해도 된다는 것이 아니기 때문에, 잘못됨에 있어서는 용서가 없다.
한국에는 '빨리' 하는 대신 '실수'라는 것이 관용처럼 베풀어지지만,
미국에서는 '제 시간에' 하는 대신 '실수'는 보상을 가져온다.
잘 잘못을 따지는 것 만큼은 정확히 계산한다.
그래서 미국이 '소송의 천국'이 되는 것도 무엇인가 잘못했을 때는 그만큼 '대가'를 치뤄야 하기 때문이다.

In Korea, 'mistake' instead of 'quickly' is given like tolerance,

That's why the United States becomes a 'heaven of lawsuits' because you have to pay that much 'price' when you do something wrong.
이것은 전쟁으로 인해 무너진 경제를 단시간에 다시 일궈낸 역사적 배경을 가진 한국과 역사는 짧지만 큰 전쟁이 없었던 미국의 배경이 그 차이가 되었으리라.
또한 아직도 한국은 '전쟁중'인 나라이다. 따라서 우리는 항상 언제있을지 모르는 전쟁의 불안, 무엇인가에 쫓기는 불안감에 재촉하고 빨리해야 하고 빨리 살아간다.
나도 한국에 있을 때는 '빨리' 해야 하는 사람이었다.
처음에는 미국의 '제 시간' 문화가 불편했지만, 지금은 조금씩 이에 익숙해지고 있다.
사람은 적응의 동물이니까. 그리고 이 문화 또한 나는 거부감 없이 받아들이고 있기 때문이랄까.

미국에서는 '내가 어떻게 너를 의심해?' 라고 생각한다.
그만큼 '신뢰'에 대한 의미 차이가 있다.
한국은 어떤 절차에 있어 항상 그것을 증명할 수 있는 모든 것을 요구하지만,
미국에서는 일단 그 사람이 제출한 것들이 사실일 것이라 믿고 시작한다.
하지만 만약 거짓임이 드러났을 때 그 차이는 어마어마 하다.
미국에서 신뢰에 금이 갔을때, 거짓말이 드러났을때는 관용이 없다.
어떤 것이 더 좋은 것이라고 말할 순 없지만,
나는 개인적으로 후자를 좋아한다.
따라서 미국에서 무언가를 시작할때 그 절차는 매우 간단하다. 한국처럼 복잡한 단계를 거치진 않는다.
사람과 사람사이, 신뢰를 바탕으로 한다는 것은 매우 값진 일이라 생각한다.
I also think that this is a matter of 'trust'.
Koreans always ask, 'How can I trust you?' starts, but
In America, 'How can I doubt you?' I think.
There is a difference in the meaning of 'trust'.
Korea always requires everything to proven it in any procedure,
In the United States, once you start believing that what the person submitted will be true.
But if it turns out to be false, the difference is huge.
When trust is cracked in America, when lies are exposed, there is no tolerance.
I can't say which one is better,
I personally like the latter.
So, when you start something in the US, the process is very simple. It does not go through complicated stages like Korea.
I think it is a very valuable thing to do based on trust between people.
