북한에서 북한을 탈출하여 제 3국이나 한국에 정착한 사람들, 우리는 탈북민이라고 부른다.
이미 한국에 정착한 탈북민 수는 3만명을 훌쩍 넘었고 해외에 있는 탈북자 수도 다 가늠할 수 없다.
탈북민들이 운영하는 유튜브, 탈북민들의 이야기를 소재로 한 방송들은 여전히 인기가 높다.
그 만큼 북한이 베일에 쌓여진 곳이기 때문이다.
그렇다면, 그들의 이야기는 모두 진실일까?
어디까지 믿을수 있을까.
그리고 이들에게도 분류가 있다.
모두 다 함께 일 수는 없는 그들, 그리고 그속에서 일어나는 많은 일들..
나는 탈북민들을 많이 만났고 그들을 인터뷰 하면서 느낀 점들을 토대로 글을 써보려고 한다.
누가 진실을 말하고 있는지. 우리는 그것을 알수 있을까.

They can't all work together, and the many things that happen in them...
I have met a lot of North Korean defectors and will try to write based on what I felt while interviewing them.
who is telling the truth can we know that?
탈북민들은 두 부류가 있다.
일반적인 탈북민들, 즉 제 3국을 통해 한국으로 입국한 대다수의 탈북민들, 그리고 소위 말하는 고위층, 비밀리에 정부의 지원으로 입국하여 소위 혜택을 받는 탈북민들, 이렇게 크게 두 분류로 나뉜다.
먼저 일반적인 루트로 한국에 입국한 탈북민들, 그야말로 생계를 위해, 또는 자신들이 가진 개인적인 이유로 목숨을 걸고 한국에 왔고, 그들은 한국에 정착하기 위해 애쓴다.
돈을 쫓아갈수 밖에 없는 자본주의 현실에 좌절하기도 하지만,
그들은 그래도 한 사회의 일원으로 살고자 노력한다.
한국의 자본주의는 그들이 한번도 경험해보지 못한, 어쩌면 북한보다 더 치열하고 고통스러운 곳일지도 모른다.
그래서 많은 나쁜 유혹에 쉽게 빠져들기도 하고 방송이라는 매개체를 통해 "북한이야기 팔이"에 젖어든다.
이것이 가장 쉽게 돈을 버는 방법이라 생각된다면 말이다.

나는 이곳에 출연하는 출연자를 만난 적이 있다.
놀랍게도, 이 프로그램의 작가가 기본적인 대본을 주고, 탈북민이 겪지 않은 이야기까지 요구하기도 한다.
그러면, 탈북민들은 어쩔수 없이 돈을 벌기 위해, 소위 searching을 해서 이야기를 만들어낸다. 마치 자신의 이야기인것 처럼 말이다.
따라서 방송에서 보여지는 이야기들은 작가가 쓴 작품이 가미된 이야기라는 점에 주의해야 한다.
어느 방송이든 그렇지만, 실제 이야기를 소재로 하는 방송도 결국, 만들어진 이야기를 된다는 것이다.
또한 최근에는 많은 탈북민 유튜버들이 활동하면서 서로의 이야기를 '참고' 하기도 하고 만들어내는 경우도 허다하다.
따라서 우리가 정말로 진실을 찾고자 한다면, 어느정도 그들의 이야기를 가려서 들을 필요가 있다.

As with any broadcast, a broadcast based on a real story eventually becomes a made-up story.
In addition, recently, many North Korean defector YouTubers are active and 'refer to' each other's stories, and there are many cases of creating them.
Therefore, if we really want to find the truth, we need to listen to their stories with some cover.
두번째 부류는 고위층이다.
그들은 일반 탈북자들과는 다른 삶을 살아왔다.
해외에 있었다면 이미 자유의 세계를 어느정도 맛보고, 그들은 부럽지 않은 생활을 해왔다.
하지만, 항상 북한의 통제와 감시에 살았음은 동일하다.
무엇보다 그들은 북한에 매우 충성하며 누리고 살았다는 점이다.
어떠한 더한 통제가 만들어지지 않는 이상, 크게 탈북할 일이 없다.
주로 자녀들이 한국 문화, 해외 문화에 빠져들어 먼저 일탈하거나, 그게 아니면 비리, 또는 북한의 소환이다.
이들은 충성하지만, 다시 북한으로 들어가고 싶지는 않다고나 할까.
그들은 한국이든 해외 어디를 가든 그들의 특권의식을 버리지 못한다.
항상 그들은 대접받고 싶어한다. 그래서 그들에게 어떤 특혜가 주어진다고 생각하면 쉽게 변절해버린다.
그리고 요구사항도 많다.
해외에서 그들이 북한인권에 대해 논하는 건 솔직히 어불성설이다.
그들은 일반 탈북자들과 다른 삶을 살았고, 인권침해에 대해 알수가 없다.
그들이 말하는 인권 침해는 뉴스 미디어에서 보거나, 그들의 탈북전에 주어진 감시나 통제, 소환문제였다고나 할까?
고위층의 삶은 명품의 삶과도 같았다.
이들의 말만 듣는 것은 북한을 제대로 이해하지 못하는 것과 같다.
The second category is the high-class.
They have lived a different life than ordinary North Korean defectors.
If they have been abroad, they have already tasted the world of freedom to some extent, and they have lived a life that is not enviable.
However, it is the same that they have always lived under the control and surveillance of North Korea.
Above all, they are very loyal to North Korea and have enjoyed their lives.
Unless some kind of further control is created, there will be no major defections.
Mostly, children immerse themselves in Korean culture or foreign culture and deviate first, otherwise it is corruption or North Korea's summons.
They are loyal, but they don't want to go back to North Korea.
Whether they go to Korea or abroad, they cannot abandon their sense of privilege.
They always want to be treated. So if they think that they are given any preferential treatment from other side, they will easily betray you.
And there are many requirements.
To be honest, it is absurd for them to discuss North Korean human rights abroad.
They lived a different life than ordinary North Korean defectors, and could not know about human rights violations.
Shall we say that the human rights violations they are talking about were issues of surveillance, control, or summons that they saw in the news media or were given before they defected from North Korea?
The life of the high class was like the life of luxury.
Listening only to them is like not understanding North Korea properly.
우리가 어떤 사람의 이야기를 듣고자 할 때는 항상 그 진실에 주목해야 한다.
그리고 그 사람의 배경에 주목해야 한다.
정말 그들이 그것에 대해 아는 위치에 있었는가.
그리고 정말 그 선택을 해야만 했는가.
그것이 우리가 진실을 판별하는 최소한의 첫 단계이다.
Whenever we want to hear someone's story, we must pay attention to the truth.
And pay attention to the person's background.
Were they really in a position to know about it.
And did you really have to make that choice?
That is at least the first step in determining the truth.
