Google 번역의 함정 - The pitfalls of Google Translate

 

우리가 흔히 사용하는 구글 번역기,

다른 언어는 모르겠지만, 한국어를 번역하는데에는 가장 큰 맹점이 있다.

한국어는 영어, 중국어 등 언어들과 그 문법이 매우 다르다.

영어, 중국어, 스페인어 등 많은 언어들은 S+V+O 순의 문법을 가지고 있다.

I don't know about other languages, but it has the biggest blind spot when translating Korean.
Korean's grammar is very different from languages ​​such as English, Chinese, and so on.
Many languages ​​such as English, Chinese, and Spanish have a grammar in the order of S+V+O.

 

하지만, 한국어는 S+O+V 순으로 항상 Verb가 마지막에 나온다.

그래서 한국어는 "끝까지 말을 들어야 한다"는 말이 생긴 이유다.

외국어들이 사용하는 연역식 문법이 아닌 귀납식 문법을 사용하고 있다.

 

However, Korean always has the verb at the end in the order of S+O+V.
That's why the saying "You have to listen to the end" came about in Korean.
It uses inductive grammar, not deductive grammar, which is used in foreign languages.

 

더구나, 한국어는 '나', '너', '그', '그녀' 등의 주어를 생략하는 경우가 매우 많다.

따라서 외국어 기반인 구글은 헷갈리기 시작한다.

영어에는 항상 주어가 필요하기 때문이다.

 

Moreover, Korean often omits subjects such as 'I', 'You', 'He', 'She', etc.
So Google, which is based on a foreign language, starts to get confused.

Because English always requires a subject.

 

종종 번역기에 한국어를 영어로 번역해달라고 주문하면,

번역기는 난데없이 주어를 넣기 시작한다.

그리고 때로는 문맥과 상관없이 'you' 또는 'they' 를 넣어서 번역해버린다.

그러면 전혀 번역하고자 했던 뜻이 아닌, 다른 해석이 되곤 한다.

따라서 반드시 번역을 확인해야 한다.

 

Often, when you ask a translator to translate Korean into English,
the translator starts inserting subjects out of nowhere.
And sometimes, it translates 'you' or 'they' out of context.
Then, the translation ends up being a completely different interpretation than what you intended.
Therefore, you must always check the translation.

 

아무리 번역 AI가 발전하고 있다고 하지만,

ChatGPT 역시 완전하지 못하게 번역할 때가 있다.

언어는 문화이고, 언어는 역사이기 때문에 아직도 많은 시간이 필요하다.

그리고 한국어는 같은 단어라도 많은 의미가 있거나,

한 가지 의미를 여러 단어로 표현하거나,

많은 외래어를 사용하는 경우도 있어 특히 번역AI가 어려움을 겪기도 한다.

ChatGPT also sometimes translates imperfectly.
Language is culture, and language is history, so it still takes a lot of time.
And Korean has many meanings for the same word,
or expresses one meaning with multiple words,
or uses many foreign words, so translation AI has a particularly difficult time.

 

한국어는 아직 정복하기 어려운 언어임에는 틀림없다.

그래서 한국어는 배움이 필요하다.

매력적이지만, 한편 어렵기도 한 한국어, 

가장 중요한 것은 한국어를 배우고 싶다는 의지가 아닐까 싶다.
