미국 대중 교통의 배려 - Consideration of American public transportation

미국 대중교통에는 남다른 문구가 있다.

한국은 대부분 지하철이나 버스에 노약자, 장애인을 위한 좌석을 미리 '비워' 두는 것이 예의라면,

미국은 언제든 양보할 준비를 해 놓는다.

한국에서는 노약자 석이나 장애인 석, 임신부 석에 앉으면

벌금을  내야 할 것 같은 분위기와 사람들의 시선에 마음이 매우 무겁다.

하지만 미국에서는 일단 누구든 앉을 수 있지만, 

언제든 양보할 수 있다.

붙여있는 문구들도 아래와 같다.

 

There is a unique phrase in American public transportation.
In Korea, it is polite to reserve seats for the elderly and disabled on most subways and buses,
the United States is prepared to make concessions at any time.
In Korea, if you sit in a seat for the elderly, a disabled person, or a pregnant woman,
I feel very heavy because of the atmosphere and people's stares as if I have to pay a fine.
However, in the United States, anyone can sit,

but you can give in at any time.

얼핏보면, 자리를 비워두라는 거 같지만, 

그들이 버스에 타면 양보하라는 뜻이다. 

 

At first glance, it may seem like you are asking to leave the seat empty, 

but this means that if they get on the bus, give way.

 

그리고 위와 같이 접히는 의자들이 많다.

그것은 유모차 등 짐이 많은 승객들을 위해 공간을 넓히기 위함이다.

가장 인상 깊었던 것은 장애인 승객을 위한 배려가 정말 많다.

장애인이 버스를 타려고 하면 기사가 내려서 휠체어를 태우고 안전하게 벨트 설치까지 다 해준다.

또한 목적지가 어디인지 확인하고 목적지에 도착하면 다시 기사가 모든 것을 도와준다.

그리고 승객들은 그 어느 사람도 불편해하지 않는다.

모두들 기다리고 배려하고 이해한다.

버스 기사들도 얼마나 친절하게 해주는지 모른다.

그래서 미국은 장애인들이 자유롭게 다닐수 있다.

유모차를 모는 승객들도, 그리고 워커를 동행하는 노약자들도 무리없이 버스에 탈수 있다.

 

When a disabled person wants to board the bus, the driver gets off and installs the wheelchair safely.
Also, check where your destination is, and once you arrive at your destination, the driver will help you with everything.
And none of the passengers feel uncomfortable.
Everyone waits, is considerate, and understands.
You can't tell how kind the bus drivers are either.
That is why people with disabilities can travel freely in the United States.
Passengers with strollers and the elderly with walkers can ride the bus without difficulty.

 

물론 미국의 다른 주들은 대부분 자기 자동차를 몰고 다니지만,

뉴욕, 특히 맨하탄은 대중교통이 주 수단이고,

남녀노소 누구나 이를 잘 이용할수 있다.

이게 맨하탄의 매력이랄까.

그리고 미국의 매너인 듯 하다.

 

Of course, most other states in the U.S. drive their own cars,

but in New York, especially in Manhattan, public transportation is the main means of transportation.
Anyone, regardless of gender or age, can use it well.
I guess this is the charm of Manhattan.
And it seems to be American manners.
