Flushing in New York

뉴욕 East River를 건너 Queens로 가면  Flushing 이라는 곳이 있다.

사실 플러싱은 최초 한인들이 코리아 타운을 시작한 곳이기도 하다.

원래 한인타운이라 불렸던 이곳이 이제는 차이나 타운을 이루고 있다. 

지하철을 내리면 여기가 미국인지 의심이 들 정도로 그냥 '중국'이다.

나도 처음 플러싱에 가보고 중국에 온 건 아닌지 착각할 정도였다.   

 

If you cross the East River in New York and go to Queens, there is a place called Flushing.
In fact, Flushing is also where the first Koreans started a Koreatown.
Originally called Koreatown, this place now forms Chinatown.
When you get off the subway, you wonder if this is America, it's just 'China'.
The first time I went to Flushing, I felt like I was in China.

 

수많은 중국 간판들, 한인들이 있는 곳이라고는 찾아볼 수 없을 정도였다. 

지하철에서 떨어져서 좀 더 안쪽으로 들어가면 한인타운을 좀 찾아볼 수 있지만,

너무 많은 중국인들이 자리한 탓에 플러싱은 이제 차이나 타운으로 불린다.

최근에는 한인들이 Bayside, Great Neck 등  훨씬 안쪽으로 자리잡고 있고,

아니면 대부분 뉴저지로 이동했다.

뉴저지는 뉴욕이 아니다.

가끔 뉴저지를 뉴욕으로 착각하는 사람들이 있지만 엄연히 주가 다르고 주법도 매우 다르다.

 

There were so many Chinese signs, it was hard to find any place with Koreans.
If you go a little further away from the subway, you can find Koreatown.
Because there are so many Chinese residents, Flushing is now called Chinatown.
Recently, Koreans have settled further inland, such as Bayside and Great Neck.
Otherwise, most moved to New Jersey.
New Jersey is not New York.
Sometimes people mistake New Jersey for New York, but they are different states and have very different state laws.

 

한인들이 자리할 곳이 사라지는 것이 좀 안타깝지만,

맨하탄에 뉴욕 코리안센터가 2월에 개관한다고 하니 좀더 기대해 볼만 하다.

중국을 보면 많은 생각이 자리한다.

그리고 나라, 인구의 힘이 무엇인지 제대로 보여주는 듯 하다.

한국도 K-pop의 열기만큼 나라의 힘도 커지길 기대한다.

 

It's a bit sad that Koreans are losing their place,
The New York Korean Center in Manhattan is said to be opening in February, so it's worth looking forward to it.
When looking at China, many thoughts arise.
And it seems to truly show the power of a country and its population.
I hope that Korea's power as a country will grow as much as the popularity of K-pop.
