Gateway Korea Foundation - 게이트웨이 한국재단

미주리에서 생활하면서 한국 커뮤니티를 찾아보던 어느 날, 나는 Gateway Korea Foundation을 알게 되었다. 

내가 도움이 될 수 있는 일이 있을까, 그리고 내심 나 또한 어떠한 인맥을 늘리고 싶었던 이유에서였다.

Volunteer에 지원을 하고 대표님을 만나러 가는 길은 무척 설레였다.

어쩌면 내가 미국에 와서 처음으로 만나는 한국인이랄까.

그런데, 이 재단의 대표는 한국인이지만 대부분 운영진은 미국인이라는 사실에 놀랐다.

특히 내 지원서를 받아 나를 만나고자 한 사람도 미국 사람이었다.

매우 호기심이 짙어졌다.

어떻게 이 분들을 한국재단을 만드는데 동참하게 되었을까?

 

One day while living in Missouri and looking for a Korean community, I came across the Gateway Korea Foundation.
I was wondering if there was anything I could be of help with, and deep down I also wanted to increase my network of contacts.
After applying to be a volunteer and going to meet the CEO, I was very excited.
Maybe I was the first Korean I met when I came to America.
However, I was surprised to learn that although the CEO of this foundation is Korean, most of the executives are American.
In particular, the person who received my application and wanted to meet me was also American.
I became very curious.
How did these people become involved in creating the Korea Foundation?

게이트웨이 한국재단에서 주최하는 추석행사

한명 한명이 모두 한국과 인연이 있는 사람들이었다.

그냥 한국을 좋아서, 관심이 있어서 참여하게 된 사람도 있지만, 한국 아이를 입양하거나, 한국 가족이 있거나, 한국 전쟁에 참여한 할아버지가 계시거나 등등  한국과 어떻게든 인연이 닿아있는 사람들이었다.

비록 한국에 가본 적이 없고, 한국어도 모르고, 한국을 완전히 이해하지 못하지만, 

어느 그 인연으로 인해 한국을 좋아하게 되고 한국에 대해 많은 것을 알아가고자 하는 그들에게서, 나는 존경심이 생겼다.

 

Each and every one of them had ties to Korea.
Some people participated simply because they liked or were interested in Korea, but there were also people who were somehow connected to Korea, such as by adopting a Korean child, having a Korean family, or having a grandfather who participated in the Korean War.
Although I have never been to Korea, don't know Korean, and don't fully understand Korea,
Because of that connection, I came to like Korea and gained respect for those who wanted to learn more about Korea.

 

게이트웨이 한국재단에서는 한국의 명절, 단오, 추석, 설에 많은 무료 행사를 개최한다.

그리고 월간 세미나, 많은 인사들을 초청해서 한국에 대한 이야기를 듣는 줌 세미나, 그리고 한국 영화 상영, 문화체험 활동 등이 이어진다. 

또한 간간히 음식문화, K-pop 공연과 같은 행사들도 자주 열린다.

내가 있는 동안에는, Covid-19 때문에 많이 개최하지는 못했지만, 그래도 문화체험 등 나도 한국에서 해보지 못한 것들을 해보는 기회를 가졌다.

 

Gateway Korea Foundation holds many free events during Korean holidays such as Dano, Chuseok, and Lunar New Year.
Additionally, there are monthly seminars, and Zoom seminars where many people are invited to hear stories about Korea, Korean film screenings, and cultural experience activities.
Additionally, events such as food culture and K-pop performances are often held here.
While I was there, there were not many events held due to COVID-19, but I still had the opportunity to do things I had never done in Korea, such as cultural experiences.

 

추석  행사

 특히 이번 추석에는 많은 행사들이 준비되어 있다.

 각종 공연부터, 세미나, 음식행사, 그리고 문화체험까지 매우 다양하다.

 미주리에서 거주하고 있다면, 게이트웨이 한국재단 사이트를 한번 방문하는 것도 좋을 것 같다.

In particular, many events are prepared for this Chuseok.
There is a wide variety of events, from various performances, seminars, food events, and cultural experiences.

나는 개인적으로 한국인들만 모인 단체보다는 이렇게 미국인들이 주를 이루면서 한국을 소개하는 단체가 더 의미있다는 생각이 든다.

아직 미주리에는 한국인들이 많지도 않고 홍보도 적지만 이곳이 그 첫 걸음이 아닐까 한다.

돌아오는 토요일, 추석행사에 한번 방문해 보는 것도 의미있을 것이다.

 

Personally, I think that an organization that mainly consists of Americans and introduces Korea is more meaningful than an organization that only consists of Koreans.
There are not many Koreans in Missouri yet and there is little publicity, but I think this is the first step.
It would be meaningful to visit during the Chuseok event next Saturday.
