과거와 현재가 공존하는 곳(Where past and present coexist)

나는 처음 미국에 왔을때 캘리포니아에 체류했다.

캘리포니아의 자연경관을 감상하고 찾아다니면서 가장 크게 느낀 것은 "자연 그대로 보존" 이었다.

한국은 깨끗하고 편하지만, 이제 옛 것을 잃어가는, 그리고 현대적인 것만 존재하는 곳으로 바뀌고 있다.

자연 속에도 인공적이고 인위적인 손길이 훨씬 많이 느껴진다.

그리고 건물들은 '보수' 보단  '재건축이나 리모델링'을 더 많이 한다는 느낌을 받는다.

하지만 미국은 그 어느 건물도 재건축은 잘 없다.

대부분 '보수'를 하기 때문에 거리 곳곳에 건물을 보수하기 위한 지지대가 1년 365일 사라지지 않는다. 

처음엔 이런 지지대가 거리마다 놓인 것이 너무 불편하고 지저분하다는 느낌을 받았지만,

지금은 왜 그런지를 이해하고 그럴수 있다고 생각하고 있다.

심지어 백화점의 에스컬레이터 중에서도 아래 사진과 같이 오래된 목조 에스컬레이터가 있다.

의도한 것인지는 모르겠지만, 층별로 에스컬레이터가 이런 특색을 가졌다는 점이 신기했다.

우리나라 같으면 현대식으로 모두 '깔맞춤'을 했을 테지만, 미국이기 때문에 가능한 듯 보인다.

 

When I first came to the US, I stayed in California.
What I felt the most while appreciating and visiting the natural scenery of California was "preservation as it is."
Korea is clean and comfortable, but now it is changing into a place where old things are lost and only modern things exist.
Even in nature, artificial and human touches are felt much more.
And I get the impression that buildings undergo more 'reconstruction or remodeling' than 'repair'.
But in the United States, none of the buildings are reconstructed well.
Since most of them are 'repaired', the support for repairing buildings throughout the street does not disappear 365 days a year.
At first, I felt that it was too inconvenient and messy to have these supporters placed on every street,
Now I understand why and I think it could be.
Even among the escalators in department stores, there are old wooden escalators as shown in the picture below.
I don't know if it was intentional, but it was strange that the escalators on each floor had this characteristic.
In Korea, everyone would have 'matched' in a modern way, but it seems possible because it is the United States.

그리고 동네 마켓들도 각각의 특색을 가지고 있다.

아래 사진의 아동용 말타는 기계는 정말 오래된 모습이었다.

지금 현재는 작동하지 않는다고 하면서도 그냥 전시마냥 두는 것이 신기했다.

 

And the local markets also have their own characteristics.
The children's horse-riding machine pictured below was really old.
It was strange to leave it as if it were an exhibition even though it said it was not working at the moment.

이러한 미국의 문화에서 엿볼수 있는 '자연스러움, 있는 그대로의 아름다움'은 나에게 감동으로 다가왔다.

무조건 현대식이 좋은 것이라는 인식에서 벗어날 수 있는 부분이었다.

있는 그대로를 소중히 여길 줄 알고 과거와 현재가 함께 공존하는 미국은,

그 속에서  항상 무언가를 배우면서 앞으로 나아가는 듯 하다.

한국도 무조건 재건축을 하기 보단, 옛 것을 보존할수 있는 방법도 강구해 보는 걸 어떨까.

그 속에서 또 다른 것들을 얻을수 있지 않을까 하는 생각이 든다.

 

The 'naturalness, beauty, as it is' that can be glimpsed in this American culture, came to me as a moving impression.
It was a part that could get away from the perception that modern style is good.
United States, where the past and the present coexist, knowing how to value things as they are,
It seems like you are always learning something and moving forward.
Rather than rebuilding unconditionally in Korea, how about finding a way to preserve the old things?
I wonder if we can get other things out of it.
