Clayton, St. Louis in Missouri story

나는 미주리 세인트루이스에 있는 Washington University in St.Louis 에서 석사를 2년간 했다.

한국 사람들은 이 대학을 많이 알지 못하지만, 미국에서는 꽤나 유명하고 미국 전체 대학 순위 14위인 학교이다.

그리고 한국의 판사들이 해외 연수로 고정적으로 찾는 학교가 바로 Washu(약칭) law school 라는 것은 잘 알지

못할 것이다.

내가 살았던 Clayton은 세인트 루이스에서 그래도 안전하고 깨끗한 동네였다.

나는 2년간 내가 생활했던 이 지역만의 매력을 공유해보고자 한다.

 

첫번째로, 미주리 세인트 루이스의 명물, Arch 이다.

 

I did my Master's for two years at Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri.
Koreans don't know much about this university, but it is quite famous in the US and is ranked 14th in the US.
Maybe people don't know well that the school that Korean judges regularly look for overseas training is Washu (abbreviation) law school.
Clayton, where I lived, was a safe and clean neighborhood in St. Louis.
I would like to share the charm of this area where I have lived for two years.
First, it is Arch, a specialty of St. Louis, Missouri.

 

 

이 Arch는 유명해서 너무나들 많이 봐 왔지만

저기를 들어가서 꼭대기에서 관람해 본 사람은 많지 않다.

그래서..

나는 올라갔다. 

나는 남들이 하지 않은 것을 꼭 해보고 싶은 호기심이 있다.

 

This Arch is famous, so many people have seen it, but not many 

people have gone in there and seen it from the top. 

So... I went up. I have a curiosity that I really want to try something 

that others have not done.

 

 

 

 

 

이곳을 올라 가려면 옆의 긴 통로를 따라 가서 엘리베이터 같은 곳

앞에 선다.

하지만 저 문이 열리면 다람쥐통 같고 이글루 같기도 한, 하얀 이상한(?) 통으로 들어가 앉게 된다.

아치 한쪽 다리를 통해 위로 올라가게 되는데 밖으론 아치 구조물인

철근이 보이고, 엘리베이터도 아니지만, 매우 신기한 구조물로 올라가게 된다. 

아마 세계 그 어디에서도 경험할 수 없는 리프트 였다고 생각된다.

 

To go up here, follow the long aisle next to it and stand in front of something like an elevator.
But when that door is opened, you enter and sit in a strange white (?) barrel that looks like a squirrel barrel or an igloo.
You go up through one leg of the arch, and the outside is an arch structure.
You can see the rebar, and it's not an elevator, but you go up to a 

very strange structure.
I think it was probably a lift that could not be experienced anywhere else in the world.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

그러면 저기 보이는 저 작은 구멍을 통해 아래 사진들과 같은 풍경을 볼 수 있다.

그리고 저 안에 들어가면 저렇게 설명과 높이가 나와있다.

 

Then, through that small hole, you see there, you can see the scenery like the pictures below.

And if you go inside, there is a description and height like that.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

우리가 익히 책에서 많이 보고 영화로 많이 접해온 미시시피강..

나도 처음 본 광경에 신기하기만 했다.

생각보다 엄청나게 크고 긴 미시시피강..

깨끗하진 않았다.

하지만 여기서 미국 중부의 무역이 시작되었다.

The Mississippi River, which we have 

seen a lot in books and seen in movies..
I was just amazed at the first sight I saw.
The Mississippi River is much bigger and longer than I thought. It wasn't clean.  But this is where trade in the Midwest of the United States began.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 강 선착장에서 유람선도 탈수 있다.

나도 유람선을 탔는데 설명도 들을 수 있어 좋았다.

그리고 바로 이곳에서 독립기념일에 불꽃축제를 한다.

바로 강 앞에서 누구나 즐길수 있는 불꽃..

아치와 함께 담아내기 위해 많은 사람들이 일찍부터 와서 자리를

잡고 사진을 찍는다.

You can also take a cruise on this river dock.
I also took a cruise, and it was nice to be able to hear the 

explanation.
And right here on Independence Day there is a fireworks festival.
                                                                                    Fireworks that anyone can enjoy right in front of the river.
                                                                                    Many people come early to settle down and take pictures

                                                                                    with the arch.

 

그리고 아치에 올라가기 전이나 또는 나와서 박물관과 역사 영화를 관람 할 수 있는데, 이 티켓들을 패키지로 사서 관람하길 꼭 추천하고

싶다.

특히 박물관만이 아니라 이 아치가 지어지기까지의 과정을 담은 다큐멘터리 영화는 미국 중부의 역사를 이해하고 이 아치가 왜 유명한지, 그리고 이를 어떻게 만들었는지 매우 생생하게 그 과정 전부를 설명해준다. 반드시 이 다큐멘터리를 관람하길 추천하고 싶다.

And before or after going up to the arch, you can watch the museum and historical film, and I would definitely recommend buying these 

tickets as a package.
In particular, not only the museum, but also a documentary film about the process of building the arch explains the history of the central United States, why the arch is famous, and how it was built very vividly.

I definitely recommend watching this documentary.

 

미국 중부 세인트 루이스에 가게 된다면, 이 아치를 제일 먼저 관람하시길..

그러면 이 곳을 더 잘 이해하게 될 것이라 생각이 든다.

If you go to St. Louis in the middle of the United States, be sure to see this arch first.
Then I think you will understand this place better.
