Rockefeller Center Christmas tree!

11/29일 저녁, 맨하탄 5th Ave 49가와 50가 사이는 발걸음을 옮기기 어려울 정도로 많은 인파로 붐볐다.

나는 항상 지나다니는 길이기에 '굳이 의도치 않아도 볼수 있겠지'라는 착각으로 퇴근 길에 올랐다.

정말 많은 인파, 그리고 며칠전 부터 준비해 둔 펜스들 덕에, 가까이 가기조차 힘들었다.

맨하탄은 길들이 동서남북 모두가 직선으로 뻗어있어 펜스를 치기에 아주 적합하다.

그런면에서 NYPD의 수고를 조금이나마 덜어줄 수 있는지 모르겠다.

하지만, 엄청난 인력이 동원되었음에도 사람들을 통제하기엔 힘들었다.

신호등 조차 건너지 못하고, 집으로 가는 길인데도 뱅뱅 돌아서 50가를 한참 벗어나서야 건널수 있었다.

사람들에 떠밀려 겨우 그 자리를 벗어나 집으로 왔다.

하지만, 많은 인파가 붐비고, 서로 부딪히는 그 어느 곳에도,

사람들끼리 밀치거나, 소리를 지르거나 화를 내는 사람은 단 한명도 없다.

모르는 사람들 서로에게 몸이 닿는 것은 매우 무례하다고 생각하는 미국 문화는

이런면에서 매우 예의바르다.  

조금만 닿기만 해도 'I'm sorry'를 누가 먼저랄 것 없이 하기 때문이다.

 

On the evening of November 29th,

the area between 49th and 50th Streets on 5th Ave in Manhattan was so crowded that it was difficult to move around.
Since I always pass by this road,

I went on my way home from work under the illusion that I could see it even if I didn't mean to.
Thanks to the large crowd and the fences

that had been prepared a few days ago, it was difficult to even get close.
In Manhattan, the streets extend in straight lines from north to south,

east to west, and are very suitable for building fences.
In that respect, I don't know if it can alleviate the NYPD's hardwork even a little.
However, even though a huge amount of manpower was mobilized, it was difficult to control people.
I couldn't even cross the traffic light, and even though I was on my way home, I had to turn around and go far beyond 50th Street before I could cross.
I was pushed around by people and barely managed to get out of the place and go home.
However, in any place where many people are crowded and collide with each other,
There is not a single person who pushes each other, yells, or gets angry.
American culture considers it very rude for strangers to touch each other.
In this respect, they are very polite.
This is because even if you touch them just a little bit,

they say ‘I’m sorry’ without anyone else being the first to say it.

이 날은 점등식과 함께 각종 가수, 셀럽들의 공연이 이어지고,

마치 크리스마스 파티와 같은 분위기를 풍긴다.

아직 크리스마스가 한 달 남았지만, 

미국은 이렇게 긴 크리스마스를 보낸다.

덕분에 매일 저녁이 아름답기도 하고 퇴근 길 기분좋은 분위기에 맘껏 취할 수 있다.

 

On this day, there will be a lighting ceremony and performances by various singers and celebrities.
It has an atmosphere like a Christmas party.
There's still a month left until Christmas,
America has such a long Christmas.
Thanks to this, every evening is beautiful and I can enjoy the pleasant atmosphere on my way home from work.

 

뉴욕의 겨울은 춥지만, 그래도 왜 뉴욕은 겨울에 와야하는 것인지,

크리스마스 분위기를 보면 알수 있다.

연말의 풍족한 분위기,  따뜻한 연말을 보내기 위해서 맨하탄은 정말 최고의 장소인 듯 하다.

사람들은 많지만, 그래서 더욱 무엇인가 활기차고,

춥지만 따듯한 분위기를 느낄수 있는 것은 아닌지 싶다.

거리 곳곳 크리스마스 파티와 마켓,  거리에 울리는 크리스마스 음악,

그냥 길을 걸어가는 것만으로도 충분하다.

 

Winter in New York is cold, but why should you come to New York in winter?
You can tell by looking at the Christmas atmosphere.
Manhattan seems to be the best place to spend a warm year-end atmosphere.
There are a lot of people, but that makes it even more lively.
Although it is cold, I wonder if you can feel the warm atmosphere.
Christmas parties and markets throughout the streets, Christmas music echoing through the streets,
Just walking down the street is enough.
