맨하탄에서 지하철 타기

맨하탄에서 생활하는데 가장 편리한 수단은 뭐니 뭐니 해도 지하철이다.

지하철이 가장 빠르고 편하게 이동할 수 있는 수단이다.

뉴욕 시티, 특히 맨하탄 내에서 이동하기 위해서는 지하철이 최고의 수단이라고 감히 말할 수 있다.

하지만 크고 작은 사고들이 자꾸 일어나는 탓에 두려운 생각이 들기도 하지만,

몇 가지만 지켜서 탄다면 그래도 안전하게 지하철을 탈수 있다.

버스도 주요 이동수단으로 안전하게 이동할 수 있지만, 지하철보다 지연되거나 변동되는 시간이 너무 많고,

지하철 보다 느리다는 단점이 있다.

However, I feel afraid because accidents big and small keep happening,

The downside is that it is slower than the subway.

 

하지만, 버스가 지하철보다 안전한 것은 사실이다.

지하철은 역무원과 경찰이 지키고 있어도 요금을 내지 않고 아무나 들어가는 탓에 홈리스도 많고 크고 작은 사고가 많은데,

버스는 일단 요금을 내지 않으면 탈 수가 없기 때문에 홈리스가 타는 일은 없다.

그리고 기사가 같이 있기 때문에 어떠한 사고가 발생하면 지하철보다는 빠르게 대처가 가능하다.

그리고 휴대폰 사용도 가능하다!

지하철도 한국과 달리 승무원이 있지만, 어떤 사고 발생시 빠르게 대처하는 것에 한계가 있고

지하철 내에서 지하철이 이동시에는 휴대폰 사용이 어렵다!

역에 정차하면 휴대폰이 연결되지만 이동시에는 SOS만 가능하다는 점을 알아두어야 한다. 

그래도 빠르고, 정확한 시간을 원한다면 지하철을 타야한다.

It is difficult to use a mobile phone when the subway is moving within the subway!

Still, if you want a fast and accurate time, you have to take the subway.

지하철을 타는 방법은 크게 세 가지가 있다.

처음 맨하탄에 와서 대체 'OMNY'가 무엇인지 때문에...

Metro 카드를 사고, 카드를 살 수 없어서 우버를 타고...

버스도 어떻게 타야 하는지 몰라서 우버와 택시에 몇 주간 돈을 쏟아부었다.

아무리 검색을 해도 다들 'OMNY' 시스템을 설명하지만 대체, 그걸 어떻게 하는 건지, 카드를 어디서 구하는 건지에 대한 설명이 제대로 없었다.

쉽게 얘기 하자면, OMNY라는 시스템을 통해 OMNY 카드, 신용카드, 또는 데빗카드로 요금을 결제하는 것이다.

즉, OMNY 카드가 없어도!!  contactless symbol이 있는 카드는 모두 결제 가능하다는 점!! 

요즘은 카드를 발급받으면 아래 표시가 카드 앞면이나 뒤에 있다.

따라서 저런 모양이 있는 카드는 뉴욕시티의 버스나 지하철, OMNY 시스템을 설치된 기기에 모두 결제가 가능하다. 

 

There are three main ways to get on the subway.
When I first came to Manhattan, because of what 'OMNY' is...
Buy a Metro card, take an Uber because you can't buy a card...
I didn't even know how to get on the bus, so I poured money into Uber and taxis for weeks.
No matter how much I searched, everyone explained the 'OMNY' system, but there was no explanation on how to do it or where to get the card.
To put it simply, you pay with your OMNY card, credit card, or debit card through a system called OMNY.
That is, without an OMNY card!! All cards with the contactless symbol can be used for payment!!
These days, when a card is issued, the following mark is on the front or back of the card.
Therefore, a card with such a shape can be used to pay for New York City buses, subways, and devices installed with the OMNY system.

Metro 카드는 지하철이나 교통카드를 파는 가게에서만 구매 가능하다.

그래서 버스를 Metro 카드로 타고싶다면 미리 카드를 구매하고 충전해 두어야 한다.

충전이 귀찮다면, 자신의 신용카드나 데빗카드를 이용하면 된다.

미국 카드가 없는 경우, 한국 카드의 경우에는 해외 결제가 가능한 저런 심볼이 있는 카드는 결제가 가능한 것으로 알고 있다.

한국에서 발행한 해외 결제 가능 카드로 한번 해보았는데, 결제가 되긴 했다.

OMNY기기는 아래처럼 생겼다. 저기에 카드를 가까이 대기만 하면 결제가 된다.

한국의 지하철과 비슷하게 생각하면 된다.

 

Metro cards can only be purchased at stores that sell subway or transit cards.
So, if you want to ride the bus with a Metro card, you must purchase and load the card in advance.
If recharging is a hassle, you can use your own credit or debit card.
If you do not have an American card, in the case of a Korean card, I know that a card with such a symbol that can be used overseas can be used for payment.
I tried it once with an overseas payment card issued in Korea, but it worked.
The OMNY device looks like this: All you have to do is hold your card close to it and the payment is made.
You can think of it similar to the Korean subway.

지하철 입구 OMNY 시스템

버스에도 위와 같은 기기가 설치되어 있다.

더이상 요금결제 때문에 우버를 타진 말자.

맨하탄은 길은 가까운데 신호등이 매우 많아서 잘못 우버를 탔다가는 느릴 뿐 아니라 요금 폭탄을 맞을수도 있다.

그리고 맨하탄은 기본 팁이 20% 부터 시작한다는 점!!

택시가 우버보단 싸지만, 요금 폭탄은 길이 막히기 시작하면 답이 없다.

자신의 신용카드로 버스, 지하철을 이용하면 된다.

지하철, 버스는 동일하게 $2.75 이다.

다만, 아직까지 자신의 신용카드로 결제할 경우 transfer 시에 할인이 되지 않는 단점이 있다.

Metro  카드나 OMNY는 transfer를 2시간 이내에 하면 1회 무료인데, 개인 카드로 결제시에는 다시 한번 더 결제가 된다는 점을 알아두어야 한다.

따라서 환승을 주로 해야 하는 사람들은 Metro 카드를 주로 이용한다.

맨하탄에 오더라도 지하철, 버스타기를 겁내하지 말고, 당당히 이용하시길...

그리고 지하철을 안전하게 타는 방법!

뉴욕은 24시간 버스와 지하철이 잠들지 않는다. 하지만, 

1. 너무 이른 시간(4:00-5:00am), 너무 늦은 시간(자정 이후)을 피한다.

2. 많은 사람들이 있는 곳에 항상 같이 대기하고 같이 타고 내린다.

3. 스크린 도어가 없기 때문에 대기시에는 양 방향 지하철의 중간, 기둥, 의자 근처에서 기다린다.

4. 휴대폰을 보지 말고 항상 주변을 살피고 기다리고 있어야 한다.

5. 지하철 이동시 어차피 핸드폰이 잘 되지 않지만, 항상 미친 사람이 없는지 잘 봐야 한다.

6. 미친 사람이 소리를 지르거나 어떤 행동을 할 때는 재빨리 그 자리를 피하고 눈을 마주치지 말아야 한다.

 

요즘은 모든 사람들이 핸드폰에 정신이 팔려있는 경우가 많다.

하지만 길을 걷거나 교통수단을 이용시 반드시 내 주변에 누가 있는지, 무엇이 있는지 살피고 다니는 것!

그것이 나의 안전을 지키는 최선의 방법이다.

항상 범인들은 '어딘가에 정신이 팔려 있는 무방비한 사람을 노린다는 점'을 명심하자.

 

And how to ride the subway safely!
In New York, 24-hour buses and subways never sleep. but,
1. Avoid too early hours (3:00-5:00am) and too late (after midnight).
2. Where there are many people, always stand by and get on and off together.
3. There is no screen door, so when waiting, wait in the middle of the subway in both directions, near pillars or chairs.
4. Don't look at your phone and always look around and wait.
5. My phone doesn't work when I'm on the subway anyway, but I always have to keep an eye out for crazy people.
6. When a mad person is screaming or doing something, you should quickly leave the place and avoid eye contact.

These days, there are many cases where everyone is preoccupied with their cell phones.
However, when walking on the road or using transportation, be sure to check who and what is around you!
That's the best way to keep me safe.
Always keep in mind that criminals are 'targeting a defenseless person who is distracted somewhere'.
