Homeless in Manhattan

요즘은 대량 이민자들 때문에 더 많아지는 추세지만,

이민자들이 아니더라도 맨하탄 곳곳에서 홈리스들을 자주 볼수 있다.

추운 겨울에는 매일 다니는 도보에서

'오늘은 살아 있나' 라는 생각으로 보기도 했다.

처음에는 눈살을 찌푸리게 했지만,

지금은 오죽하면 저렇게 버틸까라는 생각이 더 많이 든다.

 

These days, the number is increasing due to mass immigration, 
but even if you are not an immigrant, you can often see homeless people throughout Manhattan.
On my daily walk in the cold winter,
I also looked at it with the thought, ‘Is he still alive today?’
I frowned at first, 
but now I'm thinking more and more about how he is going to endure it like that.

 

아이러니 하게도,

맨하탄은 곳곳에 건물보수로 세워놓은 차양막들이,

눈이나 비를 막아주는 역할을 한다.

그리고 다른 주들과 달리 빽빽이 들어선 건물들, 식당들, 거리가 온통 먹거리 천국이다.

또한 24시간 운행하는 지하철은 그들의 또 다른 안식처가 된다.

 

Ironically,
In Manhattan, awnings are erected all over the place for building repairs.
It serves to prevent snow or rain.
And unlike other states, the dense buildings, restaurants, and streets are a food paradise.
Additionally, the subway, which operates 24 hours a day, becomes another haven for them.

 

거리에 사람들의 온기가 가득하기에,

홈리스들에게 더 오래 버틸만한 것들이 제공 되어지는 것은 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다.

물론 곳곳에 Homeless shelter가 있지만, 

그곳에서 싸움이 나거나 자리가 부족하거나 등의 이유로,

거리에 나오는 이들이 대부분이다.

 

Because the streets are filled with the warmth of people,
I wonder if homeless people are being provided with things that will help them last longer.
Of course, there are homeless shelters everywhere,
For reasons such as a fight breaking out there or a lack of space,
Most people come out on the streets.

 

하루 하루 버티는 그들을 보면서,

운명이란, 사람의 생명이란 정말 내 마음대로 할 수 없는 것이구나 하는 생각이 든다.

그 추운 겨울, 그리고 비바람이 쳐도 살아내는 그들의 힘은 어디서 나오는 걸까?

그리고 그들에게 어떤 삶의 희망이나 제자리를 찾을 만한 것을 줄 수는 없는 것일까.

많은 생각이 든다. 

부디 맨하탄에 와서 많은 홈리스들에 너무 놀라거나 거부감만 갖지는 않기를 바래본다.

 

Watching them endure day after day,
I feel like fate and a person's life are truly something we cannot control.
Where does their strength to survive that cold winter and the rain and wind come from?
And is it impossible to give them some hope in life or something to help them find their place?
I have many thoughts.
I hope that when you come to Manhattan, you will not be too surprised or repulsed by the large number of homeless people.
